Segregated Witness (SEGWIT)

Segregated Witness, or SegWit, is a technology upgrade that was implemented on the Bitcoin network in 2017 to improve the scalability and security of the network.

In a traditional Bitcoin transaction, information about the sender, receiver, and amount of the transaction is recorded on the blockchain. SegWit changes the way this information is stored, separating the signature data (witness data) from the transaction data, and allowing the signature data to be stored separately in a new part of the block. This frees up space in the original part of the block, which can be used to record more transactions.

SegWit also introduces a new transaction format that enables increased transaction throughput, reduces the transaction fees, and enhances the overall security of the Bitcoin network.

Since its implementation, SegWit has been adopted by several other cryptocurrencies, and it has become an important standard for the broader blockchain industry. It has helped to address some of the scaling issues associated with blockchain technology, and it has paved the way for further innovation and development in the space.
